Tibetan Life

The images of Tibet in 1924, contained within the collection, have become an important historical record of Tibetan culture and a way of life that in modern times has rapidly begun to disappear following ‘The Peaceful Liberation of Tibet’ by Chinese forces back in 1951.

The photographs taken by Bentley Beetham provide a small window onto the complex social structures and Buddhist values that were, and still are, core to the Tibetan people.  The recent influx of large numbers of Chinese to settle in the business centres of modern day Tibet and the high-speed rail link between Beijing and Lhasa can only serve to accelerate this demise, making even more precious these glimpses into the past.
